Outcast, by Rosemary Sutcliff • • • • • (bewertet mit 3 von 5 Punkten) Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen (REAL NAME) Rezension bezieht sich auf: Outcast (Bibliothekseinband) Having hit upon this book in our recently established school library I read it in a German translation. I had chosen it as all of Rosemary Sutcliff's books are my favourites. Following the fates of Beric I found Rosemary Sutcliff's skill again to trace and narrate human feelings as well as history. Beric being himself a wanderer between worlds allows the readers glimpses of tribal life in Britain (then under Roman occupation) as well as the life of a family of Roman patricians. Neither of these are blameless, there are good and bad characters on both sides. Of course there are a few cliches such as toiling and dying at the oars of a ship, like in Ben Hur; of course the life of a slave is dreadfully incertain, like in Uncle Tom's Cabin; but what reconciles me with any of these are the author's deeply values of what matters in human life: finding a worthwhile task, like, in this story, buiding a dyke, winning the attachment of a human being, and behaving in an occupied country as a benefactor, not as a tyrant. All of these can be found in her former classics, The Eagle of the Ninth and its sequels, Owin and others.
